DEPARTMENT OF FRANCE
MID-WINTER CONFERENCE

2021 Mid-Winter Conference Agenda

A note from VCAL, Dennis Owens on the Mid-Winter Conference (Training Weekend) 23rd & 24th  January 2021

Greetings Department of France Officers, Post members and Post Officers,

Not every Post Officer or interested Legionnaire gets a chance to make it to our Department Executive Committee DEC Meetings and our yearly Convention. A lot of new Post Officers are thrown into their Post Duties unaware of what is expected of them while others who have been Post Officers for a while sometimes think that the way they are doing business is the only way to do it. I am a fan of learning and sharing information, it is never too late to learn something new and here is our best chance to have a training weekend!  We have a large gap in Department Activities between the 2nd DEC in October and the 3rd DEC in March each year. Hence, the Mid-Winter Conference (Training Weekend). Here is our chance to get the word out to the entire Department about what is important to us a leaders about the way Post Leaders go about in their roles. Nobody takes a Leadership role in the American Legion or its S.A.L., AUX. or our ALR family all-knowing of what is expected of them. And here is our chance to help our Posts, Squadrons and Detachment Leaders.

This month on the 23rd and 24th of January, the Department of France will be conducting our two-day Mid-Winter Conference (Training Weekend) over the Virtual Computer Platform GoToMeeting. As Department Officers, Detachment Commander, Auxiliary President, Riders Director or Committee Chairman, it is up to US to conduct this Mid-Winter Conference for our Department. Our target audience is interested Post Officers, S.A.L., AUX., and ALR members and other leaders eager to learn what you have to say about your specific areas of experience.

I’ve studied other Departments Mid-Winter Conference's and am quite impressed with all the training they do. Most Departments rent out a Conference Center and hold several seminars at the same time with thousands in attendance. Ours will not be this involved. We have blocked out a 45-minute block for each participant.  For the S.A.L. Commander, AUX President and the ALR Director, we have blocked out 15 minutes for you in the same hour. If any participant wishes to have more time, please let the your VCAL know as soon as you can so he can massage the schedule. The Topics our VCAL has suggested for you to talk about are just that, suggested topics. It is entirely up to you how you fill your time. Please do note that after each speaker, there is a 15-minute break where you may get some questions on what you just covered.

Also note that your attendance and the audience attendance must not be for the full two days. It should be widely known that you may sign in and out as you wish to attend the training blocks of interest to you.

As presenters, during the conference, if you wish to have slides presented, that is fine, just provide them to the VCAL at least two days prior and then during your speaking part, just say “Next Slide Please” and it will be done for you.

What to teach??? Your experience, your vision and the guidance provided to us in the many manuals from the American Legion should guide you in what you decide to discuss. Personally, we feel that if it is important to you, then you should mention it to your Comrades eager to hear what you wish to say. In the end, we might have over 50 participants per block or even one. Your message is important to get out. Your accomplishments should be touted here too.  Each block will be recorded and available later for further training on our Department Website.

If you wish to have a conversation with me about what you can talk about, I have several ideas I would love to share with you. However, I will leave it completely up to you to decide what you wish to discuss.

Here is a rough shot at the blocks for your planning purposes…  Watch our Department Website for the latest schedule and notes!    http://amerlegiondeptfrance.org/   Mid-Winter Conference

Happy New Year all, Best Wishes and please do stay Safe and Well, VCAL Dennis Owens
